I AM (The Documentary) - Kiggins Theatre

I attended a free showing of I AM at Kiggins Theatre on Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 and was pleasantly surprised at the attendance, theater and the film’s content.  Tom Shadyac’s search for what’s wrong with the world lays the foundation for discovering connection and meaning in this uplifiting documentary.

Shadyac was a very successful director with movies like Bruce Almighty, The Nutty Professor & Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. The documentary takes an interesting point of view and proposed links between acquiring more goods than what is required and mental illness (Wetico). It covered scientific studies, philosophic ideas and spiritual views on modern human interactions.

Now I feel that it could leave skeptics in a very dismissive mood, but Shadyac is genuine, patient and ultimately likable as the documentary's main subject.  It is a well-made documentary with an agenda, albeit not an overtly a political one, but one that appears to have the best interest of humanity in mind.  Shadyac applied his craft from mainstream big budget movies to the introspective world of documentaries and created a great mirror for the soul.  He challenges us, the viewers, with several scientific theories and evolutionary approaches while we follow him on a search for connection, community and love.

I enjoyed the documentary very much, found the science compelling and the message uplifting despite some mild political overtones. I definitely would like to see more about the research. It was a fun and uplifting ride that I would love to see again. Kiggins Theatre is playing I AM on Tuesday, January 24th 2012 at 7:00 PM for FREE! There is the option of donating to some non-profit organizations at the box office as well.

I would suggest this to families, fans of documentaries and anyone looking for a feel-good movie.  It is definitely worth a rental, on-demand streaming or better yet... check it out at the Kiggins.  Let me know what you thought of the documentary after you check it out.

Thanks~
